ILLUMINATING SOLUTIONS
The exterior lighting upgrade was a bit of an afterthought, coming into consideration towards the end of a 2-year envelope and seismic stabilization project undertaken to ensure continued historical preservation. With just weeks to go before the scaffolding was scheduled for removal, the chosen light fixtures needed to be Quick-Ship ready, and staying on budget was just as critical as staying on time at such a late stage. BL Lighting rose to the challenge, providing product samples and working closely with the design and installation team to ensure the most suitable lighting system would be specified for the task.
ELEGANT EFFICACY
With sustainability and efficiency in mind, it was decided that BL Arealinear LN8286 linear wall washers, with a low 18-watt power consumption and 30° beam distribution were the ideal choice, offering a simple to install solution that would add the desired luminance to the project. BL Lighting’s luminaires create dramatic effects, efficiently highlighting the gorgeous beaux-arts inspired architectural details, and illuminating the sculptured columns and pilasters set into the façade.
As a designated heritage building, new penetrations to the building exterior were to be avoided. BL Arealinear LN8286 standard 120V plug and play cables made it possible to run long power cable lengths, thereby preserving the original structure. The minimal form of the light, at just 1 ft wide, delivers an effective 880 lumens in a warm saturated 3000K, and 180° adjustable mounting brackets built onto the luminaires allow for precise placement of light. Carefully positioned projections visually redefine the elaborate Edwardian façade, accenting the ornamentation and stonework.
SIGNALING SOMETHING SPECIAL
Sandstone festoons and a series of sculpted faces, including a portrait of King George V, decorate the exterior walls. Along with these ornate features, the projecting pavilions, high-hipped roof and stunning clock tower with a working bell all work together to display an amazing culmination of building sophistication, architectural design, craftsmanship and technical construction capability for the time. Our lighting enhances the architectural details, highlighting each intricacy with care, compelling passersby to see the illuminated visage in all its glory.
The three-story building was designed by revered architect Archibald Campbell Hope, to serve as a Post Office, eventually becoming home to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and several Federal Government agencies before falling into disuse. With support from the City of Vancouver, local community groups successfully rallied to preserve this treasure, and today, Heritage Hall provides office space to non-profit organizations, becoming a placemaking community space, with a ballroom used for cultural celebrations, lectures, film shoots, weddings, wine tastings and other special occasions.
An immensely beloved landmark since 1914, Heritage Hall holds a place of reverence in the hearts of locals. The unique characteristics offered by BL Lighting’s innovative luminaires, including beautiful color rendering, maximum light output, minimal dimensions, and energy efficiency along with ease of installation and adaptation to the structure make them the perfect addition to adorn this enduring historical conformation for future generations to enjoy.
