COMPELLING CHALLENGES
The Clock Tower faced numerous challenges that demanded a creative and effective approach. Its clock mechanism had been non-functional for years, and the metal components suffered from weather-induced wear. Toronto’s extreme climate required a lighting solution durable enough to handle both scorching summers and harsh winters. Modernizing the structure also necessitated balancing its historic charm with contemporary upgrades. Finally, as a prominent landmark, the lighting design needed to deliver uniform illumination without glare, enhancing the tower’s appeal and maintaining its iconic status.
SMART SOLUTIONS
BL Lighting partnered with Acuity Brands to deliver a tailored lighting system featuring the versatile BL Neonview. Precision-crafted to fit the Clock Tower’s four-sided frame, the customizable BL Neonview provided seamless integration. Its RGBW LED system enabled dynamic, controllable lighting effects, allowing vibrant color changes to celebrate events and holidays. The system’s shadow-free, even illumination enhanced the tower’s aesthetic appeal without creating glare, even in direct view.
Designed for reliability in extreme conditions, the IP68-rated BL Neonview was built to withstand Toronto’s fluctuating weather, with an operational temperature range from -40° to 131°F ensuring consistent performance year-round. The lighting was securely attached to the custom metal frame using low-profile mounting hardware. This solution revitalized the Clock Tower, blending advanced technology with historic preservation.
HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS
The restoration extended beyond lighting to encompass a comprehensive transformation. Custom metal panels, inspired by the painted ceiling of the Church of the Holy Trinity, merged historical motifs with modern design. Media blasting and repainting refreshed the tower’s metal components, while the granite base was carefully restored for structural integrity and visual appeal. Repairing the clock mechanism restored functionality, breathing new life into this cherished landmark.
