The historic El Cortez Hotel and Casino, a fixture in downtown Las Vegas since 1941, recently completed a $20 million renovation of its 18,000-square-foot casino floor. The project was designed to modernize the gaming experience and attract a new generation of visitors, while preserving the property’s storied character. Located in the vibrant Fremont East District, the remodel blends contemporary design with timeless Las Vegas charm, with lighting playing a central role in the transformation.
FEATURES & FUNCTIONALITY
The design team sought a lighting system that would highlight the architectural ceiling coves with a warm, welcoming glow, offer precise dimming for different moods, and support sustainability through efficiency and longevity. The solution also had to adapt seamlessly to curved profiles and intricate ceiling details, ensuring an unbroken line of light that elevated the casino’s atmosphere without overshadowing its historic architecture.
BL Lighting delivered BL Flexform B5, a trusted specification-grade LED system selected for its blend of performance, sustainability, and design versatility. Installed primarily in 2700K with a 110° beam angle, and complemented with 3000K in select areas, B5 creates a rich and inviting glow throughout the casino. Its universal bending capability allowed the luminaire to follow the El Cortez’s complex ceiling coves with precision, eliminating shadows and breaks. High output of up to 540 lumens per foot, combined with fantastic 95 lm/W efficacy, delivered strong illumination while minimizing energy use. Paired with BL’s dimmable multi-output J5 drivers, the system provided the facility with reliable and flexible control across the entire floor.
