REVIVING RADIANCE
Located in Vancouver’s Granville Entertainment District, this historic building has undergone a remarkable transformation. Originally built in 1913 and redesigned in 1938 to incorporate Art Deco elements, the façade of this iconic structure once featured neon signage that contributed to the lively “Theatre Row” atmosphere. As part of the redevelopment into The Rec Room, the design team sought a lighting installation that would reintroduce the building’s nostalgic neon glow while using modern, energy-efficient technology. Our BL Neonview Dome profile was selected to deliver the nostalgic neon appeal, bringing new life to this heritage landmark and echoing Vancouver’s rich neon history.
ARTFUL ALIGNMENT
Restoring the 1938 Art Deco façade demanded a meticulous touch to preserve its historic charm and cultural legacy. This was far from a standard installation—every inch required precision.
The design team faced a unique challenge: illuminating the building’s artistic second-story façade without the intrusion of power cables that could disrupt its clean lines and architectural harmony. To protect the historic structure, strict limits on wall penetrations were also required. BL Neonview provided the ideal solution, offering both flexible design and long continuous run lengths that delivered long lines of shadow-free illumination. Our team collaborated closely with installers to select the premium cut option, allowing for precise manufacturing in 0.66” increments to achieve the exact lengths needed. Thanks to BL Neonview’s custom seamless terminations, wiring was skillfully and completely hidden within the structure, keeping the focus on the balanced blend of vintage artistry and modern illumination while meeting the project’s strict aesthetic and preservation needs.
NEON NOSTALGIA REBORN
Our BL Neonview lighting system was the trusted choice for more than just its ability to recreate the vivid glow of classic neon; it also offers a resilient, energy efficient, sustainable and beautiful illumination solution. With IK08 impact resistance, IP68 ingress rating and silicone encapsulation, BL Neonview withstands both intense heat and freezing cold, ensuring longevity in any weather. Designed to capture the original neon essence that once enlivened Granville Street, it now reawakens the district with a fresh touch of mid-century vibrancy. Custom color options accentuating the richness of the façade’s unique textures and patterns, and transform the building into a radiant beacon for the area’s revival.
LIMITLESSLY UPLIFTING LIGHTING
Our lighting installation has reinvigorated the neighborhood, creating a sense of pride and nostalgia while attracting both locals and tourists. By highlighting the cultural and historic significance of the 855 Granville building, the installation not only improves the general perception and safety of the area but also encourages public interaction with the urban landscape. The lighting acts as a point of orientation and a nod to Vancouver’s neon heritage, harkening back to the 1950s when the city, once known as the neon capital of the planet, dazzled with an array of vibrant signs.
The BL Neonview installation exemplifies how modern lighting technology can pay homage to a neighborhood’s history while meeting contemporary needs. This project is part of a larger trend of revitalizing urban spaces through light, merging history and innovation to foster community engagement and cultural appreciation. Through careful design and execution, we have helped create a landmark that celebrates Vancouver’s architectural heritage and dynamic urban spirit, ensuring that Granville Street remains a vibrant part of the city’s identity for generations to come.
